Militants kill three Iranian border guards in Sistan and Baluchistan

Iranian state media reported that on Thursday, armed militants killed three Iranian border guards and wounded another in Mirjaveh, a district in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The IRNA news agency stated that the militant group Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jaish al-Adl advocates for greater rights for Iran’s Baluchi ethnic minority.

According to IRNA, the militants opened fire on the border guards near the Pakistan border, killing two soldiers and an officer and injuring a civilian.

Sistan and Baluchestan, which border Afghanistan and Pakistan, have been the site of occasional deadly clashes between militant groups, drug traffickers, and Iranian security forces.

In April, at least 22 Iranian police officers were killed in two separate clashes in the province.

In December, Baluchi militants killed nearly 10 police officers in an attack on a police station in the same region.

These incidents highlight the ongoing unrest and security challenges in Sistan and Baluchestan, fueled by militant groups and organized crime.

The region’s instability, combined with growing ethnic tensions, continues to strain Iranian security forces, particularly near its volatile borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan.
