An American Airlines flight slipped off a runway at New York’s Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport at around 4 p.m on Thursday, leading to 53 people having to be evacuated from the aircraft.
The plane had traveled from Philadelphia and slipped after landing due to snowy weather conditions.
New York City saw its biggest single-day snowfall in nearly two years on Tuesday, and while the total amount was less than two inches, it was enough to break the city’s longest recorded streak of no significant accumulation.
A total of 1.7 inches had fallen in Central Park by 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service
None of the 50 passengers and three crew members on the American Eagle flight 5811 were injured. “After landing safely in Rochester (ROC), American Eagle flight 5811, operated by Piedmont Airlines with service from Philadelphia (PHL) to ROC, exited the taxiway while in transit to the terminal due to snowy airfield conditions,” American Airlines said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.
“Safety is our top priority, and we apologize to our customers for their experience,” they added. “Everyone on board deplaned safely and was transported to the terminal by bus.” American Airlines also stated that the aircraft will be towed from the taxiway and undergo a full inspection.
