World Renowned online food guide TasteAtlas, known for its focus on traditional dishes, released a list of the “100 Most Legendary Restaurants in the World,” which includes Karachi’s own Zahid Nihari.

Karachi’s beloved local dish, Nihari, a staple in daily meals and a festive delicacy, recently made international headlines after being ranked 89th on TasteAtlas’s list.

Spicy and savoury Nihari, a slow-cooked stew with beef shank (bong) and tender beef, is a beloved staple across Pakistan. Its origins trace back to Delhi, and its popularity in Karachi is particularly strong, owing to the families who migrated from there. Today, this fragrant dish, bursting with aromatic flavours, tender meat and spices is enjoyed in every corner of the country.

Nihari was initially served as breakfast to the Muslim Nawabs of Lucknow and Dehli.

Situated near Tariq Road, Zahid Nihari has carved its niche as one of the finest spots for authentic Pakistani cuisine, particularly their celebrated Nehari.

The name “nihari” stems from the Arabic word “nahaar,” meaning “morning.” This suggests it was supposed to be a breakfast dish.

While originally prepared with beef shank, nihari has evolved to include lamb, mutton, and chicken as substitutes in recent times. The addition of maghaz (brain) and nalli (bone marrow) is widely cherished as a culinary delight.
