Mango diplomacy: Bangladesh PM sends gifts of mangoes to Pakistani counterpart

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent fresh seasonal mangoes as gifts to her Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif, media in Bangladesh widely reported on Monday.

The Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad handed over 1,500 kg of mangoes to a protocol officer of the Pakistan foreign ministry on Monday, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Md. Ruhul Alam Siddique, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Pakistan, said the gift would add “a new dimension to the diplomatic relations between the two brotherly countries and will further accelerate the development of mutual bilateral relations.”

Following the end of British rule in India, present day Pakistan and Bangladesh formed a single state for 24 years but then East Pakistan became a separate nation after the 1971 war.

In recent years, as India’s relations with its neighbors in the South Asian region deteriorate, old foes Pakistan and Bangladesh have made a push to build diplomatic, economic and cultural ties that could upend decades of historic arrangements in the region.
