One soldier, martyred, militant killed during gunbattle in northwestern

One was matryredr and a militant was killed on Thursday during a gunbattle in the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the media’s military wing said.

The development takes place a day after Pakistani security forces shot dead two militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s District Bannu during an operation. The military said the slain militants were actively involved in conducting attacks on security forces and civilians.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistani Taliban have stepped up attacks in the South Asian country ever since a truce brokered by the Afghan Taliban government broke down in November 2022. In their quest to impose a strict version of Islamic law, the TTP have carried out some of the deadliest attacks on Pakistan’s security forces since 2007.

“On 18 May 2023, fire exchange took place between own troops and terrorists, in general area Loesam, Bajaur District,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. It added that one militant was killed during the gunbattle.

“However, during an intense exchange of fire, Sepoy Shafiq Ur Rehman (age 23 years, resident of DI Khan) having fought gallantly, embraced Shahadat [martyrdom],” the ISPR said.

The military’s media wing said Pakistani security forces are determined to eliminate terrorism. ISPR
