PTI writes to UN, demands ‘independent’ probe into journalist Arshad Sharif’s murder

PTI leader Murad Saeed took to his official Twitter handle to say that lawmakers including former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan have written to the United Nations demanding an independent probe into Arshad Sharif’s assassination.

Murad Saeed tweeted, “Pakistani MPs, including former PM Imran Khan, have written to the UN demanding an independent investigation into Arshad Sharif’s murder. We are grateful to all MPs who joined UN_for_ArshadSharif .”

The senior journalist and former ARY news anchor was murdered on October 23 in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where he was living in self-exile. Kenyan police had earlier said that Arshad Sharif was killed in a case of “mistaken identity”. Earlier in April, the Supreme Court (SC) had indicated to set up a judicial commission into the murder of senior journalist Arshad Sharif, reports ARY News.

According to the details, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has given the written verdict of the previous hearing of the Arshad Sharif murder case. The written judgment mentions that if the court is not satisfied with the investigation, a judicial commission will be set up, according to news reports.

Arshad Sharif’s family lawyer Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui objected to the court proceedings. Siddiqui said that the Supreme Court can monitor and investigate cases related to fundamental rights, but cannot monitor the investigation of the JIT. The court has given the JIT three more weeks to conduct the investigation abroad, the written judgment said.
