The Afghanistan-based group said one of the slain police officers, Iqbal Momand, was targeted because he was behind the capture and killing of some militants. took responsibility for this attack.
This group is independent but allied with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Attacks have increased in Pakistan since the end of the ceasefire between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban and the government of Pakistan.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban has become emboldened since the Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, when US and NATO forces left the country after 20 years of war. Since the Taliban took over, many leaders and fighters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) have found refuge in Afghanistan.
Pakistan has seen countless militant attacks over the past two decades, but attacks have increased since November, when a month-long ceasefire deal with the Pakistani government brokered by the Afghan Taliban ended.
The unrest comes days after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponed parliamentary elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. This was due to increased attacks and the government’s refusal to provide much-needed funding, security forces and polling staff. The government cited financial restrictions as the reason.
