The General Council of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) on Thursday removed former Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain from the post of party chief, citing growing discord in its ranks. His brother Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, who is allied with Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) along with his cousin and former Punjab chairman Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, was chosen as the party’s new president, while Kamil Ali Agha was selected. as Central General Secretary. The incident comes days after Shujaat, then PML-Q president, suspended Elahi’s core membership in response to his statement about a possible merger with the opposition PTI. The show cause notice served on Elahi mentioned that the PML-Q president called an urgent meeting of senior leaders where it was stated that the provincial president did not have the authority to merge the party with the PTI.
The notice demanded an explanation from Elahi within seven days or action would be taken against him under Article 16 and Article 50 of the party constitution. The decision to issue a notice to make Elahi visible was taken during a high-level party meeting attended by then general secretary Tariq Bashir Cheema, senior vice president Chaudhry Salik Hussain and senior leader Chaudhry Shafay Hussain.
The statement clarified that PML Q has its own individuality and is not someones property, it has its own die hard voters, it has discipline in party and regulations, which were violeted.
