President Dr Arif Alvi rebutted a statement “wrongly attributed” to him regarding the suspected support extended by former army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) during the 2018 general election and in the Senate.
“President Dr Arif Alvi has taken notice of the statement wrongly attributed to him about the alleged help extended by [Bajwa] and his team in the Senate, and their help to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf during the elections also,” the media wing of the presidency said.
“The statement has been quoted out of reference to the context and is twisted and self-concocted,” it said.
The statement came after The News quoted Alvi telling journalists, leaders of the business community and foreign diplomats during a dinner on Saturday that “Gen. Bajwa and his team” had helped former prime minister Imran Khan in the polls.
According to the publication, Alvi was asked during the gathering about the souring of relations between Khan and Gen. Bajwa to which he responded he was still looking for the answer.
The president said it was probably in October last year and then in April or May this year, the report said.
“The statement has been quoted out of reference to the context and is twisted and self-concocted,” the presidency added.
