A cable bridge on the Machchu river in Gujarat’s Morbi area collapsed on Sunday hours after prime Minsiter Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a C-295 transport aircraft manufacturing plant, in Vadodara. According to news agency PTI, local hospital has said that at least 60 people have died in the incident till now. In the latest update, BJP MP from Rajkot Mohanbhai Kalyanji Kundariya has informed news agency ANI that more than 60 bodies of the deceased have been recovered, of which more are of children, women and elderly. he further informed that the rest of the people have been rescued.
Ambulances have reached the spot to carry injured to hospitals. Rescue operations are underway. There were over 400 people on the bridge at the time. They fell in the Machchu river in the town of Morbi, local TV channel said.
Several reports have confirmed that the 230-metre historic bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century. It had been closed for renovation for six months and was reopened for the public last week.
